Inner Harbour Totem Raising

On October 4th, our team members were honoured to be invited to be a part of the canoe protocol and witness the raising of a totem pole by Tom Lafortune in the inner harbour.

Tom dedicated the totem pole to the late John Rice to honor all the efforts him and his family put in to facilitating and sustaining “one of the best kept secrets”— the Easter weekend All-Native Totem soccer tournament.

To this day, this soccer tournament brings people together from all over with soccer matches for everyone from kids to adults. We raise our hands to the Rice family for their work in carrying on their father’s legacy.

We turn our hearts to these community role models as we draft our new service delivery and infrastructure models—in the hopes that we can ensure that opportunities like these will always be present in abundance for all of our the children, youth and families on the South Island.
