Summer/Fall 2022 Community Engagement- Urban

Including our urban community members’ voices is an important part of SIIA’s community engagement work. Over the summer and fall, our team has reached out and connected with a number of key Indigenous Service providers who primarily serve the urban community in the city.

Some highlights include:

-Setting up a booth and giving away free swag at Back-to-School Picnic put on by Surrounded by Cedar and the Victoria Native Friendship Centre;

-Facilitating discussions with Surrounded by Cedar’s staff and Youth Council;

-Attending a Victoria Native Friendship Centre youth drop-in night

-Facilitating two group interviews with Hulitan staff members

-Supporting the annual MMIW walk

A healthy urban Indigenous child looks like one who feels love; feels safe; who has pride in who they are and where they come from; who has joy; who plays; and one who has nutitional and traditional food access.

You have to be loud to be heard in the system, so the quiet ones go unnoticed... but they might need help too.

This legislation needs to reflect Indigenous ways of knowing and begin to reflect the importance of connection to culture for Indigenous children.
